History of the American Leopard Hound
The American Leopard Hound has existed in the Americas since the 18th century. However, the origin of this precise breed is not clear. The ancestors of the American Leopard Hound were crossed bred with Mexican dogs before they resulted in the breed that they are today in North America. During the 18th century, the American Leopard hounds were brought to North Carolina and to other states in the south, where they trained to become hunting dogs. The United Kennel Club recognized this breed in 1998, but back then, they were known as the Leopard Cur. But in 2008, the breeder association, along with the United Kennel Club, decided to change the breed’s name from Leopard Cur to American Leopard Hound in order for the dogs to compete in coonhound events. Four years later, the American Kennel Club inaugurated the American Leopard Hound into their Foundation Stock Service, which means that this breed is one step closer to full breed recognition.
