Origins of the Kromfohrlander

Interestingly, this medium-sized canine has its share of the incredible history of dogdom. We can trace back the origins of the Kromfohrlander to the early 20th century during World War II. During this time, army men often use animal pets to remind them of home and provide them comfort; these small animals often include stray cats and dogs.

One of the most famous dog companions of the US troops was “Original Peter”, which they found in northern France. This dog was a long time companion of the US troops as they travel across the land; it is a terrier-mixed breed that is known as the army’s mascot. However, after crossing Germany, the troops lost the dog.

Thankfully, “Original Peter” was found by a German named  IlseSchleifenbaum; the breed was accidentally crossed with a Fox Terrier, wherein it produced good-looking puppies that resemble the appearance of “Original Peter.” Schleifenbaum was amazed by the result of the accidental cross-breeding, which led her to decide on developing and reproducing the breed.

She succeeded in producing the breed and decided to name it after the ‘KrummeFurche’ of farmlands. She continued to develop the breed rigorously; 10 years later, the breed was standardized by the Federation CynologiqueInternationale. It didn’t take long for the breed to gain recognition in various European countries. However, despite the breed’s greatness, the Kromfohrlander is considered a rare breed, mainly because breeders are mindful of maintaining the dog’s purity.
